What is the difference between DTF printing & Sublimation printing? Which is better?

Table of Contents

Sublimation printing is a popular method used for customizing a variety of products, especially apparel and promotional items.  DTF printing, which stands for Direct to Film printing, is a relatively new and innovative digital printing technique that allows for high-quality and vibrant designs on various textiles, especially clothing items.

About Sublimation Printing

Process

  1. Design Preparation

*Create designs digitally using specialized software.

*Mirror the design before printing to ensure it transfers correctly.

  1. Printing

*Print the design on sublimation paper using sublimation inks.

*Sublimation inks are specially formulated to sublimate or turn into gas when heated and pressed.

  1. Transfer Process:

*Place the printed paper with the design face-down on the target item made of polyester or coated with polyester, such as clothing, mugs, or textiles.

*Use a heat press to apply high heat and pressure to the item.

*The sublimation inks turn into a gas under heat and pressure, permeating into the material’s pores and permanently dyeing it.

  1. Cooling and Finishing:

*After the heating process, allow the item to cool down.

*Once cooled, the item will have a permanent, colorful, and detailed design that blends seamlessly with the material.

Pros:

*Ideal for all-over prints and vibrant designs.

*Works best on white or light-colored polyester fabrics.

*Offers a soft, breathable finish as the ink dyes the fabric.

*Durable and long-lasting prints.

Cons:

*Limited to polyester-based materials.

*Not suitable for dark-colored fabrics.

*Requires specialized sublimation inks and printers.

About DTF Printing

Process:

  1. Design Preparation:

*Create or select a design digitally using graphic design software.

*Print the design onto a special DTF film using a compatible printer.

  1. Film Transfer:

*Use a heat press to transfer the printed DTF film onto the fabric.

*The film is placed face-down on the fabric with the design touching the material.

  1. Heat Press Application:

*Apply heat and pressure using a heat press to ensure proper adhesion of the design to the fabric.

*The heat activates the adhesive layer on the DTF film, allowing the design to transfer onto the fabric.

*After the transfer process, the film is peeled off, leaving the vibrant design on the fabric.

Pros:

Can be used on a variety of fabrics, including cotton and dark-colored garments.

Allows for detailed and vibrant prints with high color saturation.

Supports a wide range of special effects like metallic and glitter finishes.

Cons:

May result in a slightly thicker feel on the fabric compared to sublimation.

Requires additional steps like weeding and transfer film preparation.

Setup costs may be higher than sublimation printing.

What is the difference between sublimation printing and DTF printing

Sublimation printing and DTF printing are both popular methods for transferring designs onto various substrates like fabrics, but they differ in their processes and the materials they use.

  1. Materials

* Sublimation paper is a paper, while DTF film is a PET film.

* Sublimation ink is different from DTF ink

* Sublimation printer is often bigger than DTF printer, but DTF printer has an extra powder shaking machine

  1. Adhesive

The design is printed onto sublimation paper and then transferred to the substrate using heat and pressure. The heat causes the inks to turn into a gas, allowing them to penetrate the surface of the substrate and create a bond. While DTF printing uses powder as the adhesive.

  1. Application

Sublimation printing is typically used on materials coated with a special polymer coating. It works best on light-colored fabrics to achieve vibrant colors.

DTF printing is more versatile and can be used on a variety of fabrics, including cotton and blends. It provides a high level of detail and color vibrancy.

  1. Durable

DTF printing is more durable than sublimation printing

For your reference

Sublimation Printing: Primarily used for polyester fabrics or materials coated with a polymer layer, best for light-colored items.

DTF Printing: Offers versatility in terms of compatible fabrics, allows for intricate designs, suitable for a wider range of substrates including cotton.

In essence, while sublimation printing is ideal for polyester materials and offers vibrant colors, DTF printing provides greater flexibility in terms of substrate options and allows for detailed designs on various fabrics, making it a popular choice for customized apparel and merchandise.

DTF or Sublimation, Which to Choose?

It depends on your specific requirements, such as fabric type, design complexity, color vibrancy, and intended use.

For Fabric Type:

Polyester: Sublimation printing is best for polyester fabrics.

Cotton and Dark Fabrics: DTF printing is suitable for cotton and dark-colored garments.

Design Complexity:

For intricate designs with vibrant colors, DTF printing offers better color reproduction.

End Use:

Sublimation printing is ideal for sportswear and promotional items.

DTF printing is versatile for various fabric types and special effects.
